Email Inheritance — What Happens to Your Gmail and QQ Mail After You Pass Away

Many people don't realize that email is the most critical account in their digital legacy — not because of what's in it, but because it's the recovery key for every other account. Bank statements, WeChat and Alipay security verification, social platform password resets, cloud storage login alerts — all go to email. Gmail's Inheritance Option

Google doesn't offer email inheritance, but it does provide the Inactive Account Manager. You can enable it in your Google Account settings: choose how long the account must be inactive before triggering (3, 6, 12, or 18 months), select up to ten contacts, and choose which data to share (Gmail, Drive, Photos, and so on). When the timer fires, Google sends you an alert; if you don't respond, it emails your chosen data to your contacts. This is the closest official mechanism to email inheritance — but note that it shares data, not account control.

What About QQ Mail

QQ Mail and your QQ number are the same account. Tencent's user agreement states that QQ numbers belong to Tencent and users have usage rights only. Prolonged inactivity can trigger reclamation — once reclaimed, all emails, contacts, and attachments are permanently wiped with no recovery option. Tencent does not offer a digital legacy or memorial feature. Family can request account cancellation with a death certificate but cannot inherit the account. The practical move: export important emails while the account is active, and store the password encrypted.

The Most Practical Handover Plan

Whether it's Gmail or QQ Mail, official processes have limits: the Inactive Account Manager takes months, and QQ reclamation wipes everything. The most practical approach is to encrypt and store your email password in a digital legacy vault with heartbeat-triggered release, so your designated contact can log in immediately after you go unreachable — export important emails, handle other accounts' recovery flows, and act before the account is reclaimed. Don't Forget Two-Factor Authentication

The password alone isn't enough. Modern email almost always has two-factor authentication — Google uses SMS or Google Authenticator, QQ uses SMS. Even with the password, your family can't log in without the verification device.
